Art by Doug Gilchrist

About the Artist

Doug Gilchrist began painting on formed and shaped canvasses during his four years of undergraduate work at the University of North Carolina. After receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from UNC, Doug taught for three years in a junior high school in Durham, North Carolina, while he continued to paint and exhibit in regional art shows throughout the Southeast. See Gallery I - (1965-1972)

After receiving numerous awards for his paintings, Doug applied to several graduate art programs. He received a full fellowship to attend Claremont Graduate School in Claremeont, California. There he continued to paint hard edge abstractions on shaped canvasses. While at Claremont, Doug worked with the relationship between different kinds of light and his artwork. This interest evolved into black and white photography developed on canvas combined with painting.

In 1974, Doug set his abstract pursuits aside to fulfill a request his father had made, to do a painting of Toby Tillett. "Old Tobe" was a boat captain who ferried fishermen across Oregon Inlet to Hatteras Island back in the thirties on North Carolina's Outer Banks. The painting, done from an old black and white photo his father had taken, immediately won two shows, one at the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, Virginia, and the other at the Mint Musuem in Charlotte, North Carolina. On the heels of his success, several realist and surrealist paintings followed. See Gallery II - (1972-1976)

In 1977, Doug was introduced to his first video camera by a friend in San Diego who sold video production equipment. He bought his first camera which led to editing equipment and the computers with graphics and animation software. Doug traded his canvas and paintbrushes for pixel manipulation and lines of resolution. See Gallery III - (1977-1990)

"Born again" in 1984, Doug was led in 1990 to his most exciting and humbling work, portraying Jesus in the outdoor drama "Worthy is the Lamb." His nine-year involvement in this play, his relationship to his family and to his Lord, greatly influences everything he does today. See Gallery IV - (1990-present)

As owner of Hatteras Television Productions, in Beaufor, North Carolina, Doug produces a regular tourist information TV program called "DO-WHAT," that airs on two cable systems in coastal North Carolina, a weekly program for his local church, and numerous music videos, including "Carolina Seascapes Plus."
