Beaufort, North Carolina

Beaufort, North Carolina's third oldest town, had its beginnings in the early 1700's. The town was named after the Duke of Beaufort (Henry Somerset - 1684-1714) and was established in 1722. It serves as county seat for Carteret County. Rich history is preserved in downtown Beaufort's historic district spanning 21 blocks along a beautiful waterfront and expansive boardwalk with a variety of distinctive shops and restaurants on one side and the Rachel Carson Estuarine Research Reserve and Carrot Island along the other (where one can often see wild horses grazing). Beaufort's picturesque, old tree-lined streets include many historic structures, including Hammock House which was built in 1709, the Old Burial Ground, and many other interesting sights. Beaufort is also the home of the North Carolina Maritime Musuem, located on Front Street, along the waterfront.

For more extensive glimpses of Beaufort and surrounds, view our slide shows which feature Beaufort's historic district architecture, more waterfront scenery (including views of Carrot Island wild horses), Shackleford Banks and its famous wild horses (Shackleford is located very near Beaufort and is also part of the Outer Banks of North Carolina), as well as the area's great diving opportunities.
