Cape Lookout National Seashore is an unspoiled barrier island system (comprised of North and South Core Banks, and Shackleford Banks) located between Beaufort Inlet and Ocracoke Island and is part of the Southern Outer Banks. Its pristine beaches draw nature lovers, fishermen, and hikers. Access is only by boat or ferry and there are no maintained roads, park facilities or fresh water. From mid-March to December, rental of rustic cabins is available. Primitive camping is also available all year long without fee. Cape Lookout boasts a lighthouse which has been operational since 1859.
The Cape Lookout National Seashore Visitor Center is located at the tip of Harker's Island (phone 252-728-2250) and provides information and any necessary permits.
