Down East, as it is called locally, is the eastern part of Carteret County that begins with North River Bridge along Highway 70 East and ends with Atlantic and Cedar Island, the latter being the northeastern most point of the county. Cedar Island has a ferry which runs to Ocracoke Island. The Down East area is a conglomeration of small communities which engage predominantly in fishing and farming and includes many picturesque areas. It is one of the more natural areas of the county with its many marshes, canals and woodlands teeming with wildlife. One of the larger Down East communities is Harker's Island which features the Core Sound Waterfowl Musuem and also has a ferry running to Cape Lookout National Seashore and Cape Lookout Lighthouse. Cape Lookout National Seashore runs parallel along the coast to the Down East area.
