Fort Macon State Park is located on the tip of Bogue Banks, two miles east of Atlantic Beach. Historic Fort Macon, situated on 385 acres, is a pentangular fort completed in 1834. The fort has a museum area, bookstore, and restored quarters, with free guided tours during the summer. There is also a mile-long nature trail as well as picnic areas and areas for rock jetty fishing along the shore. Areas for sunbathing and swimming are also available in the public swimming beach area which includes a bathhouse.
The park area is open daily between 8:00 AM and sunset and the fort is open between 9:00 AM and 5:30 PM. With over one million visitors per year, Fort Macon is the most visited state park in North Carolina.
