Morehead City, North Carolina
Morehead City, North Carolina, located on the sound side of Bogue Sound across from Atlantic Beach, is named after its founder, John Motley Morehead, who was governor of North Carolina between 1841 and 1845. The city was established in 1857 and with the completion of part of the North Carolina railroad system between Morehead and Goldsboro in 1858, the city not only functioned as a port but also as a transport center, carrying large supplies of fresh seafood to more inland sections of the state. Modern Morehead City is a thriving community, with many visitor accommodations, restaurants, marinas, numerous shopping centers and plazas stretching from the city limits on the western side along Highway 70 West into downtown Morehead and its waterfront section.
