Ocracoke (Island), North Carolina

Historical records dating back from 1585 give reference to a Native American derivative of the island's name on a map from that time. The name "Ocracoke" itself derives from the Woccon tribe of American Indians which inhabited the mainland and utilized the island for a variety of purposes. European settlement of Ocracoke began around 1718 after the capture and execution of Edward Teach, also known as the infamous 'Blackbeard' the Pirate, who terrorized the Ocracoke Inlet area prior to his capture. Located in Hyde County, and as one of the barrier islands of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Ocracoke Island is only accessible by boat or plane. Ferry service connects Ocracoke to both mainland Hyde County and mainland Carteret County. Ocracoke features numerous historic buildings, Ocracoke Lighthouse (dating from 1832), the British Cemetery, Banker Ponies, kayaking opportunities, and pristine beaches. Ocracoke also has modern and comfortable lodging facilities, restaurants and a variety of interesting shops.

A CAROLINA SEASCAPES VIDEO PLUS segment, Suspended In Time was also shot in Ocracoke. The music and title so fit the essence of this little village on North Carolina’s Outer Banks that it inspired this video which was the first one done in this series. It includes many shots of the lighthouse and Silver Lake as well as a memorial service conducted each year at the British Cemetery. Many things on Ocracoke have changed even since this video was shot but a visit there today will still leave you Suspended In Time. [Watch and listen to this segment of the video.]
